Ling Ling’s at TOLA offers a menu with movement based on small plates which are constantly updated, including creations such as ‘Mum’s spring rolls with shredded cabbage and house tonkatsu’, ‘Dad’s crispy duck with pickles and house hoi sin’ (a nod to her roots) as well as forward thinking inventions such as ‘Burrata with lime leaf oil, green sauce and edamame’, and ‘Mushrooms & waffle served with a chive & ginger mayo’. Modelled on the street food cafes and stalls from around South east Asia, the menu is designed with sharing at the heart of the dishes.
Jenny Phung, founder of Ling Ling’s says “I think it's so important that the second generation takes their food culture into their own hands to change perceptions of the cuisine. Gone are the days that Chinese food is considered as gloopy, sweet, battered food — it’s so much more diverse than that. We are now more educated, with an understanding that we need to change the language of food.” Ling Ling’s Bottomless Lunch starts from 2pm every Sunday, offering unlimited Sweet and Spicy Korean Gochujang Wings and Dry Rub Chongqing Wings, both available in Cauliflower for vegetarians and all gluten free, accompanied by beer and prosecco. Based at £35 per head its a bottomless brunch with a fantastic twist rarely seen within the capital. The collaborative Supper Clubs on select Wednesday nights come with some of Jenny Phung’s friends across the food world, the first of which partners with Indonesian home-cooked concept, Spoons, taking place on July 7th. This first event sold out in 24hrs, the next event is taking place on August 18th with tickets going on sale soon.
Jenny is finding her own way to tell her stories through food. She’s part of the second generation, so while there is a sense of familiarity with many of the dishes, it’s her own take on her Cantonese heritage. Jenny Phung, the creator of Ling Ling’s, uses food to explore her heritage and reconnect with her Chinese roots. Born and raised in Manchester, spending much of her childhood helping her parents with their Chinese restaurants.
