Whisky’d Away: Ncn’ean Whisky Distillery Offers Female-Only Internships in the Remote Scottish Highl
In a bid to encourage more women to consider working in the whisky industry, Ncn’ean Distillery has today announced that it will be offering two women a week-long, all expenses paid internship at its distillery, tucked away in the beautiful Scottish Highlands.
The whisky industry has long been perceived as a man's world; both in the making and drinking of it. But things are changing: more women are drinking whisky and Ncn’ean is hoping to encourage more women to think about working in the industry as well. It’s important for women to see that opportunities exist in all areas of whisky production. The Whisky’d Away experience aims to raise the profile of distilling itself and challenge any gender-based stigmas associated with the whisky industry. Ncn’ean is offering two women the chance to join the distillery team for a weeks’ internship, with all expenses paid. The internship will showcase all aspects of creating Ncn’ean’s whisky - from mashing, distilling and maturation to making cocktails. It will also include the opportunity to sample the still-maturing whisky (to launch in 2020) and forage for local plants used in the Botanical Spirit. Located on the Moverm peninsula, the independent distillery offers a chance to reconnect with nature and reflect on more than just what it takes to make whisky by experiencing all sides of the process. The one-week internship will take place from 15th to 20th July and will include travel, peaceful accommodation surrounded by nature and local food over the course of the week. To apply entrants must be female, aged over 18 and available to travel to Scotland from the 14th - 20th July inclusive.

“I wanted to challenge the outdated views a lot of people still have. The number of times people ask me ‘do you actually like whisky?’, just because I am a woman, and the lack of gender balance in the industry in Scotland suggests we all still have more work to do. The internship will be a chance for two women to experience all aspects of the small operation and invite them to understand what working in a distillery really involves. We hope that women from all walks of life that want to try their hand at something new will apply.”
