For those looking for the perfect thing to do in London this winter, the iconic John Lewis rooftop on Oxford Street returns, inspired by the celebratory frost fairs of 17th Century London, with hot gin cocktails from Sipsmith, freshly baked pies from MYPIE and Oxford Street’s first ever rooftop skating rink.
Following on from the lively Summer of Sound on the Roof, John Lewis & Partners has launched the ultimate winter hideaway in collaboration with Sipsmith Gin. The winter rooftop draws inspiration from the hedonistic frost fairs that took place on the frozen River Thames during the cold months of the 17th Century, when shop owners would set up stalls selling hot gin to hundreds of delighted Londoners. Along with a delicious hot gin and complete makeover, for the first time ever the rooftop will host its own skating rink allowing visitors to practice their pirouettes above the heart of central London. As the passionate pioneers of the gin renaissance, Sipsmith will be sharing their love of all things gin by transporting experience seeking shoppers back to Christmases of winters past, as they serve up hot gin tipples at the rooftop bar. Visitors can also cosy up at two bookable ‘Hideaways’ to enjoy a selection of delicious serves including Hot Gin & Ginger, Mulled Sloe Gin and Hot G&Ts , when enjoying a hearty offering from MYPIE. In addition, the characterful Sipsmith team will be hosting guests for a series of rooftop gin masterclasses, where they will find out about the infamous frost fairs of days gone by, before enjoying a juniper-filled cocktail making masterclass, giving ginthusiasts the opportunity to learn how Sipsmith London Dry Gin is the only gin hosts need this Christmas to create an array of delicious cocktails.
Providing proper good food, MYPIE will be keeping bellies warm with trusty pies, delicious savoury bakes and mouth-watering desserts. Taking residency in their first out-of-truck kitchen, the award-winning MYPIE will be serving Scotch eggs, freshly baked sausage rolls, and a rotating menu of mouthwatering pies including Venison, Juniper & Chestnut Mushroom, Creamy Chicken & Smoked Ham, and Roasted Pumpkin, Green Chilli & Feta, all served with buttery mash and lashings of homemade gravy.
Background Bars will be on the roof, serving a variety of winter themed tipples as well as a series of delicious mocktails to warm up with, including a mulled apple punch and a chamomile fizz.
