Immersive Resistance Themed Bar #Maquis Announced for Cardiff's Festival of Voice

Named after the rural guerrilla bands of French Resistance fighters of WWII, #Maquis is hosted by Don't Tell Anyone Cardiff and will serve a selection of cocktails in a hidden Twitter invite only cell for festival goers with a rebellious streak. Calling the people of Cardiff to free their voice and liberate their land, #Maquis, is a secret immersive bar experience popping up in the Welsh capital as part of the city's biennial arts festival, Festival of Voice.

The covert meetings commence from Thursday 7 June and will take place at a secret location with instructions given over Twitter to those curious enough to enter a dialogue with the #Maquis via Twitter account @DTACardiff. Communication lines are open now.

The disused city centre premises will be "brimming with contraband" with a prohibited mixologist serving classic ‘SPIRITS’ from the bar to help strengthen courage and put fire in the bellies of festival goers who will be encouraged to adopt disguises. Throughout the evening, DJ's Radio Barkas will be sending coded messages via vintage vinyl records to the front-line to warn Comrades of any impending danger. “Whatever happens, the flame of our people must not be extinguished” said one of the #Maquis' allies.

Festival of Voice provides the city-wide platform for powerful and diverse voices from music, arts, theatre and the community to hear and be heard. #Maquis is part of a programme that features many distinctive and powerful voices including Patti Smith, Elvis Costello & The Imposters, LUMP, the new creative project from Laura Marling and Tunng's Mike Lindsay, Angélique Kidjo’s reworking of the Talking Heads’ masterpiece Remain In Light, Gruff Rhys and BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Billy Bragg and Nadine Shah’s Voices of Protest, Angela Denoke with WNO Orchestra and Passenger on the main stage at Wales Millennium Centre, from 7 – 17 June. The Festival Hub will also be the home to Refugee Food Stories, a pop-up food offering and training scheme in partnership with Oasis Cardiff, an organisation that aims to help refugees and asylum seekers to integrate into their local community. There are opportunities to get involved in Festival of Voice with Processions (10 June), a once-in-a-lifetime chance to take part in a mass participation artwork to celebrate one hundred years of votes for women (processions.co.uk); Gig Buddies Cardiff, a befriending scheme that matches people with a learning disability with volunteers who share the same interests. Other festival activities include a Talks programme (9 – 10, 15 – 16 June) at Jacob’s Antique Market, in partnership with The Open University in Wales.
